Juices can't claim to cure any of these ailments, but they may help to alleviate the symptoms. Also juices rich in vitamin C and E may help speed recovery.

Burns and scalds

Minor burns are a common hazard in the home. As soon as one has occurred you should hold the affected pan of your body under the cold tap for several minutes; this helps the skin to cool down, and restricts the area affected by the burn. Drinking juices rich in vitamin C and E may also help speed recovery afterwards.

Relief from aches and pains

Conditions like rheumatism and arthritis can be crippling, but more often than not produce regular nagging pain. It's the same story with gall stones, headaches and migraine. Juices can't claim to cure any of these ailments, but they may help to alleviate the symptoms.

Arthritis and Rheumatism

There are two types of arthritis - rheumatoid and osteo. In rheumatoid arthritis, wrists, knuckles, knees and feet tend to become the most inflamed part of the body, whereas in osteoarthritis, it is often the cartilage linings around weight-bearing joints such as hips that degenerate, causing inflammation, pain and stiffness. Arthritis often occurs, therefore, in areas of the body which take the greatest wear and tear during our lifetimes. Rheumatism is an umbrella term for both types of arthritis, and also aches and pains that often come on during damp and chilly weather.

Celery juice, with its high concentrations of sodium and potassium, is the vegetable juice most often recommended by naturopaths as an excellent natural remedy against both kinds of arthritis and rheumatism. Pineapple juice may also help because it contains bromelain (an enzyme which has anti-inflammatory properties).

Headaches and Migraines

Tension, the atmosphere (e.g. certain weather conditions, air conditioning and traffic pollution), food allergies, general illness, and eyestrain can all cause headaches and in the worst cases migraine. Headaches range from sharp shooting pains to all-enveloping aches that can radiate down the neck.

Celery juice can help to alleviate headache pains as it has a high sodium and potassium content. Juices rich in the B complex group of vitamins may also be useful.
