Alcohol. What Is Your Normal Intake Level

Print

wineFor many of us drinking alcohol is an enjoyable social activity. A glass of wine with a meal or a drink in the pub with friends is a pleasant way to relax at the end of the day. But it is wise to keep your intake of alcohol to sensible levels. One way is to check how many units you consume on a regular basis.

Nutritional content

Alcohol is made from the yeast fermentation of different fruits or grains including grapes, hops, apples and barley. Spirits are distilled and contain no sugar, while beers and wines have varying amounts of sugar still remaining. Alcoholic beverages contain almost no other nutritional value than sugar but they do contain calories.

Medical benefits

In small amounts, alcoholic drinks, such as red wine may protect against some medical conditions including coronary heart disease. However, too much alcohol may cause weight gain and is harmful to health.

Moderation

It is wise to keep your intake of alcohol to sensible levels. One way is to check how many units you consume on a regular basis. A single unit of alcohol equals:

1/2 pint of ordinary beer

1 small glass (60 ml/2 oz) sherry or fortified wine

1 small glass (120 ml/4oz) wine

1 single measure of spirits.

Men can drink about 3-4 units a day or up to 28 units a week without harm to health. For women the level is lower, about 2-3 units per day or up to 21 units a week.
