Serve Tasty Hot Toasties: Recipes and Tips


Hot-ToastiesA toastie makes a quick and nourishing hot supper snack. To make a toastie for one person, you will need to use one medium slice of wholemeal bread (4 Sins) from a large 800 g loaf. Don't be tempted to substitute muffins, rolls or pitta bread, or the Sins will soon mount up. To make each toastie, just take 1 medium slice wholemeal bread (4 Sins) and then toast the bread on both sides, either in a toaster or under a preheated hot grill. Do not overcook or the toast will be hard and unappetising – it should be crisp, a pale golden brown and still slightly soft in the middle. Top the toast with one of the delicious toppings listed below.

Pissaladiere toastie

Cook 1/2 onion in a little chicken STOCK made with Bovril until the onion is tender and syrupy and has absorbed the stock. Meanwhile grill 1/2 small red pepper and 1/2 small yellow pepper until blistered and charred. Peel, deseed and cut the flesh into thin strips. Pile the onion on top of the toast and arrange the peppers in criss-cross strips on top. Halve 4 stoned black olives (1/2 Sin) and place in the gaps between the peppers. Season with salt and pepper.

Smoked salmon pate toastie

Put 57 g/2 oz smoked salmon trimmings (4 Sins on Green) and 57 g/2 oz very low fat natural fromage frais in a blender with a squeeze of lemon juice and some black pepper. Blend until smooth and spread over the toast.

Grilled mushroom toastie

Place 2 medium-sized whole mushrooms (preferably open-cap field ones) and 1 tomato cut in half on a grill pan. Spray with Fry Light and grill until tender and slightly charred. Season with salt and pepper, sprinkle with chopped parsley and place on top of the toast.

Spicy bean puree toastie

Put in a blender 1 x 198 g/7oz can drained butter beans (10 1/2 Sins on Original), 1 garlic clove, a squeeze of lemon juice, 2 sprigs fresh coriander or parsley and 1/2 small finely chopped and deseeded red chilli. Blend to a paste and season to taste. Warm through in a pan over a low heat, spread on the toast and dust with paprika.

Serves: 1

Sins per toastie: 14 1/2 Sins on Original; 4 Sins on Green

Tips: Use bea ns as a Healthy Extra and deduct 6 Sins per serving.


Hawaiian toastie

Spread the toast with 1 level teaspoon Dijon mustard (1/2 Sin) and cover with a 28g/1oz slice lean boiled ham (2 1/2 Sins on Green). Top with a canned pineapple in natural juice (1 Sin).
