The local producer of organic frozen vegetables and fruits, which are marketed throughout the U.S. and Canada, recently ventured into a new market in the frozen foods industry.

According to Pete Gengler, Sno Pac was recently approached by Ahold, Inc., a multi-national company based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, to come up with a way to make their organic peas and sweet corn microwave-ready.

After conducting considerable research and testing, Sno Pac was able to come up with several microwaveable products for Ahold.

"Ahold just started marketing our new microwaveable peas and sweet corn on the East Coast under the name, 'Nature's Promise.' The new products are being marketed through two of Ahold's large chain stores out east, Giant Stores and Stop and Shop," Gengler reported.

When asked how Ahold heard about Sno Pac, Gengler replied, "through the grapevine. Ahold is a very large company. They knew we offered a number of organic items, and decided to take the microwaveable approach. The microwaveable peas and sweet corn will be available in 16 ounce bags."

Gengler continued that when Ahold approached Sno Pac about the possibility of microwaveable organic vegetables, the idea really wasn't even on Sno Pac's radar screen.

He explained that most people who want organically grown fruits and vegetables are also concerned about some of the chemical issues involved with microwave cooking in plastic. Many companies offer the convenient 'pop the bag of frozen veggies in the microwave and moments later dinner is served' products. But up until now, no one has incorporated organic food items with the microwave.

"When we were approached about this, we were asked to give Ahold a bid. If it works out, they may want to expand the number of items. We've done the research, and know it works. I guess we'll just have to see how this works out," Gengler concluded.

Sno Pac currently offers 15 different organically grown fruits and vegetables that can be found in the frozen food section of grocery stores throughout the United States and Canada.
