Sloppy Joes consists of a spiced beef mixture
This popular American snack consists of a spiced beef mixture which can either be spooned on to cut toasted baps or used as a filling.
25 g (1 oz) butter
1 onion, finely chopped
1 green pepper, cored, deseeded and finely chopped
125 g (4 oz) mushrooms, thinly sliced
750 g (1 1/2 lb) lean minced beef
50 ml (2 fl oz) chilli sauce
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon chopped parsley
salt and pepper
8 baps, toasted and lightly buttered
1 small lettuce (optional)
8 celery sticks (optional)
2 tomatoes, thinly sliced (optional)
cucumber slices (optional)
Melt the butter in a large saucepan and then add the onion and fry gently for 10 minutes until tender, stirring frequently. Add the green pepper and mushrooms and cook for 3 minutes. Add the minced beef and cook until lightly browned. Remove from the heat, drain off any excess fat and then return the pan to a low heat.
Add the chilli sauce together with the Worcestershire sauce, parsley and seasoning. Stir well and then simmer slowly for about 5 minutes.
Fill or top the toasted baps with the beef mixture and serve on warm plates. If liked, serve with lettuce leaves, celery sticks and some sliced tomato and cucumber.
